I think internships should be a mandatory part of college education. I heard numerous former college students comment on how they wished that their college years had lasted longer. This wold be possible if a form of co-op was required. I believe that many students are graduating in a major that they will never use in there carreers. With a mandatory Co-Op students would have multiple semester experiences in their prospective fields and gain hands on experience while in college in an attempt to off set the learning curve when they graduate. The mandatory Co-Op will have the advantage to allow a student to "shadow" their current major with in the beginning years of their undergraduate degrees. So while the student is completing general education courses they will see what individuals in that job experience day to day. If the student determines that "all this engineering work" will force me into a career that involves nothing that they are interested in, they can change their degree in time.
I have done two internships already and each one has not been what I thought it would be, and not what I am looking for. But despite this fact, I was able to narrow down what I might be good at and what I would rather do instead.
I was also given the chance to enjoy the college life for another semester so that when it comes time to graduate I will be well experienced, and ready to move on with my life.
